Haleakala Summit |
Once you have reached the top of Haleakala you have already completed a feat. Now, you may not enjoy the scenery, as it does not look at all like the sandy beautiful beaches and unique tropical flora that you expect. Here you will see small leaves and spiny needle type plants. Not only that, but you will experience a cold, windy, and arid climate. |
Hana Highway - Preparing for the Hana Highway Drive |
Okay, I know you are going to hear all kinds of things before you head off to drive along Hana Highway; some of it might be true while other things you hear are way off. First things you will hear is that you will need a 4WD vehicle. |
Hana Highway 1 – Pa’ia to Ke’ anae |
If you head out of Pa’ia on highway 36 going east, you will find that you are already on Hana Highway as the name is changed and so are the mile markers after you drive past mile marker 16. You will notice that the mile markers begin at 0 and start up again, this is where Hana Highway really starts. |
Hana Highway 2 –Ke’ anae to Nahiku |
Just before you reach Ke’anae, you will pass by the Ke’anea Arboretum, which will take you through about 30 minutes to stroll through and enjoy all the natural plants that call Maui home. You may wish to just stay here for the night and rent a cabin at the YMA camp, which can be found close by Ke’anae. |
Hana Highway 3 – Nahiku to Hana |
If you have an idea of what heaven is like with lush beautiful greenery and a view that makes you stand in awe, then you have envisioned Nahiku. |
Hana Highway 4 - Hana Sights to See |
Many people believe that Hana is a rainy place to visit; however, it does not rain as much here as it does in northwest area around Nahiku and farther up in the mountains. |
