Hawaii to Introduce Parking Fees At Selected State Parks

Parking Fees To Be Charged At Specific State Parks

Date:  10/15/09

Due to severe funding shortfalls, the Hawaii Department of State Parks plans on charging for parking at specific parks, monuments, scenic shorelines, and waysides.  This program will be modeled after the one already in place at Diamond Head State Monument where they have a manned booth set up and charge $ 5.00 per vehicle.

Without the vehicle tax, the Division of State Parks says they may have to close certain parks in order to reduce costs.

The Division of State Parks only wants to charge visitors and commercial vehicles,  not the locals.  There will be some delay as they consider the best way to implement the collection of the fees (manned booths vs. electronic cash machines).

The following fees shall be applied:

General Public:
Resident:  No fee
Visitor:  $ 5.00 per vehicle ($ 3.00 at Nuuanu Pali due to shorter visitation time)

Here is a list of parks, monutments, recreation areas, and waysides  which shall be affected:

Hawaii
Akaka Falls State Park
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area

Maui
Makena State Park
Iao Valley State Monument

Oahu
Ka Iwi Scenic Shoreline
Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside ($ 3.00 per vehicle due to reduced time of vist)

Kauai
Ha'ena State Park
Kokee and Waimea Canyon State Parks
