South Maui Golf Courses

There are five wonderful golf courses in South Maui that draws golfers from the world over. There may be a bit of wind but it is calmer here than you will find in other areas around Maui.

Makena Resort has two courses that you are sure to enjoy. Makena Resort South and Makena Resort North are both great courses however, golfers that know the game and are a bit more experienced prefer Makena Resort South.

Makena Resort South has slower greens and the hazards are more successfully executed. On this course you will enjoy close ocean playing with magnificent views of Molokini and Kaho’olawe. Once you hit hole 3 you may think you are in horror movie with the looming eight bunkers that stand protecting the green. Not only does it look a bit frightening, but it is also a short and lethal par 4. Hole 7 may be one of most favorite holes among all the golf courses on Maui. This hole is 599 yards from the champion tees. All you need to do is drive it straight toward Molokini offshore and keep going until you hit the green. Hole 13 takes your ball over the water, if you can drive it right. Too many golfers are not prepared and their ball goes for a swim. Hole 15 is another great hole with a 180 yard distance from the tee to the flag. Need to take a deep breath after this one, just walk to the edge of the green and view the beautiful black sandy beach.

Makena Resort North does not receive the raves that the South course does, mainly do to upkeep. This course is challenging though since it is narrow and has adjoining fairways keeping it a tight course. You must be ready for a huge challenge if you wish to walk away with a good score. Okay, Hole 6 is the tricky one. The fairway is split in an unusual way and you should stay left but not too far left or your ball will take a long trip to the bottom of the gorge. Either way, you will love the view of Molokini behind you even if your ball disappears. Hole 13 is elevated so you can at least see the scattered bunkers below. Hole 14 is a straight 611 yards downhill. Hole 15 is very tight and pretty deadly.

Prices for a round of golf on both courses vary from $ 60 to $ 175.

The other three golf courses on South Maui are the Wailea Golf Club - Gold, Emerald, and Blue.

Every golfer seems to love Wailea Golf Club Emerald. This course is the widest of the three with a beautiful picturesque view of Kaho’olawe offshore on Hole 4. The 10 th hole green shares it spot with Hole 17. Hole 15 is an uphill climb that is a full 395 yards and a tough par 4. The 18 th hole has you staring straight at Pu’u Olai’i which looms ahead of you 360 feet high. This course is considered to be a favorite for most women golfers.

Wailea Gold is the course if you love fascinating views. The very first fairway gives you a wonderful view of the islands offshore. If you hate water hazards then you do not have to worry much since there is only one on the entire course. Hole 9 is probably the one that make you flinch as you view the lava embankment in front of you. However, do not think you have it made. When you arrive at Hole 11 you had better be ready to beat the sand. This hole has more sand traps than any course on Maui. This par 3 is not as easy as it looks.

Wailea Blue is considered to be a rather boring course by many. It is the oldest Wailea course and is set around the homes off Kaukahi. Hole 4 has a couple of blind spots. Hole 14 is not for anyone that slices their ball. This course may not be as exciting, but remember, everyone takes it a bit slower in Hawaii and this course will help get you in the mood.

Rates are between $ 140 and $ 190; however, if you are staying at the Wailea Resort you will receive a discount.
