Overview of South Maui Beaches

South Maui has more wonderful beaches than all of Maui, so if your dream vacation includes fun on the beach and exciting water sports then you have your paradise.

The surf in South Maui is normally flat during the winter months while small during the summer months. The only complaint you might here is the winds that tend to pick up from small breezes in the early morning hours to strong as the day wears on. However, the winds tend to die back down in the evening. The problem with the wind here is that it starts coming around the mountain at north Kihei in the late morning and at the other end at La Perouse Bay it comes toward south Maui as well. The last beaches the wind reaches are in Wailea. If you desire the beach without the wind, then you must visit during the early morning.

When you try to give out the best beaches in South Maui, you are sure to have a hard time making a decision as to which ones really are the best since there are around 25 beaches here.

Since it is very hard to tell you exactly which beach is the best, here is a small list of some of the best beaches found in South Maui.

Ma’aleaea Bay: This beach can be found from Ma’alaea Baby to north Kihei. This is the best beach for strolling during the early morning and late afternoon. When you reach close to Kihei, you will find Sugar Beach.

Sugar Beach: Great beach with rentals such as windsurfing boards

Kama’ole Beach: This is really three beaches in one, which are named Kama’ole I, Kama’ole II, and Kama’ole III. Kama’ole is the longest and considered the best of the three. Here you can enjoy swimming, showers, restrooms, and there is a lifeguard on duty. Kama’ole II is a snorkeling hangout. Kama’ole III is the most popular when it comes to the locals. Bodyboarding is the most popular water sport on this one. All three offer great swimming and other water sports.

Keawakapu Beach: This beach is located at the south end of S. Kihei Road. It is a very nice most sandy beach. A few rocks may be found here and there but overall a very nice beach.

Mokapu and Ulua Beaches: The only reason you here these two beaches put together in the same sentence is that they share a parking lot. As you take the path down toward the water, the beach on your right is

Mokapu and the one on the left is Ulua. Mokapu is not as crowded, but if you want to dive then Ulua is the beach for you.
Wailea Beach: This beach has been ranked as the best beach in America. The reason is clear water, fine sand, calm waters, and beautiful scenery. You can park past the Grand Walilea however; the parking spots are filled up pretty fast.

Polo Beach: Polo Beach is located two miles from the Wailea Iki intersection. You can enjoy fine sand with a few more rocks than Keawakapu Beach, picnic tables, restrooms, shower, and BBQ grills.
Palauea Beach: This beach can be found off Makena Road. It is not usually crowded as mainly the only people that know about this beach are the locals. You will have to walk through the trees to find this hidden treasure.

Po’olenalena Beach: This beach is another hidden jewel, which is often overlooked by tourists. You will hear this unique beach called by various names such as Paipu Beach, Love Beach, Pepeiao-lepo Beach, Keauhou Beach, and Makena Surf Beach. This is a nice beach with offshore water being broad, flat, with a sandy bottom. The best way to find this beach is just south of Makena Surf, if this one is full, you will have to get there by parking close to where mile marker 2 should be.
