Central and Upcountry Golf Courses

Many people do not venture off to other golf course, but they are missing a treat especially to their wallet. Of course, you may not be against the shoreline or at a resort but the golf courses are just as great away from the fancy resorts.

Dunes at Manu Lani may not have an ocean view and will be quite windy, however, it is not as windy here as you will find at Kapalua. Dunes at Maui Lani was the creation of Robin Nelson and has beautiful rolling terrain and of course plenty of sand. This is a challenging course to say the least with the wind and the sand traps you are sure to meet your match. The best time to play a round is of course in the morning when the wind is not as fierce. On the first 10 holes, the wind will be blowing on your left. Hole 4 has some steep, deep bunkers to keep you on your toes, while hole 6 offers a par 3 but over water. On hole 10, wait for the bell to sound to let you know it is clear for you to tee off. It is a downhill and blind par 4. If you are an expert you might be able to par this one during the afternoon, but I rather doubt it. Rates for Dunes at Manu Lani are $ 98, twilight $ 45. You can find this wonderful golf course on 380 just south of Puunene Road.

King Kamahameha golf course has been known by the names of Sandalwood Golf Course and Grand Waikapu Golf Course. Today, both of these are being cleaned up and updated as the former owner met with financial troubles and thus the demise of these awesome golf courses. Watch for them opening soon under the new names of Kahili Course and Kamehameha Course.

Waiehu Municipal Golf Course is very well maintained and gorgeous. Maybe not a resort course, but the ocean is right along side you on the first 9 holes. Holes 5 through 8 having you up close to the shoreline, which makes for interesting golfing. The play is not that hard even for beginners, with few hazards and the majority of the bunkers are close by the greens. Winds are not gusty as you will find elsewhere, but do tend to pick up around 11am, but are steady. This course is a delight without a cart but you can rent a cart for $ 8 or a pushcart for $ 2, if you desire. Rates are $ 26 during the week and $ 30 on weekends. The course can be found north of Kahului on Highway 340 north of Waiehu Beach Road.

Pukalani is one of the best golf courses for beginners you might ever see. There is no fairway sand, holes are long but mostly straight, and the greens ready pretty much right on. This would be one of the best courses if you have the kids along and they want to try golfing with dad. Rates are $ 60, twilight $ 45. There is no dress code to worry about, so the entire family will be able to enjoy the day with dad. Pukalani is off Old Haleakala Highway in Pukalani.

Golf is a sport that anyone can enjoy and when you have picturesque scenery that you can find Maui, why not bring the whole family out for a day of golf. You might find that you enjoy bringing along everyone especially if the course is not a treacherous one for the kids. Mountains, beaches, lava rock, and of course the beauty of a landscaped golf course can start the day off right.
