Beach Safety in Maui

Everyone travels to Hawaii for its beautiful sandy beaches and tropical weather; however, many do not realize that Maui is considered the Ocean Island. Maui has more user-friendly beaches than all of the Hawaiian Islands, so if experiencing tropical paradise in terms of beaches then Maui should be your destination.

No matter where you go to enjoy activities on a beach, you should learn about beach safety. Do not think that every beach in the world offers the same dangers and that the waters will be exact. This is so far from the truth it is scary.

The number one concern for safety on Maui is the surf. You will find that Maui has calm sea days and days that the surf will chew you up and spit you out. It is best to know the weather and what the surf might be like on the day you plan to go swimming. You may find that it would be best to just sit and watch the surf as it powerfully pounds the beach than trying swimming. You can call 877-3611 for a surf forecast if you wish to swim. However, pay attention to the ocean, Hawaii is the undisputed drowning capital of the world.

What else should you watch for on Maui beaches? Rip currents are quite popular. They can form, die down, and form again in just minutes and without any warning. Rogue Waves may also catch you off guard. These tend to occur when two or more waves join at sea to become a gigantic wave. These rogue waves can and do occur on a calm and quiet sea. The best rule of thumb is not to go into the water if you notice a rip current or if the sea is not calm. If you are not a great swimmer, it would be best to swim only where a lifeguard is present for your own safety. You do not want to become a statistic just because you wish to swim in the ocean.

Beach Safety Tips

  • Do not swim alone
  • Do not turn your back on the ocean
  • Do not swim unless the seas are calm
  • Do not swim in the mouth of a river
  • Do not swim in murky water
  • Do not let young children play in water unsupervised
  • Never walk to close to the shorebreak
  • Watch the condition of the waters carefully
  • Fins are a good safety device while giving you more power and speed
  • Reef shoes are a good safety precaution
  • Wear Sunblock

Even though you are on vacation and do not believe that anyone would steal any of your belongings, you would be surprised at how tempting a purse might be in an unlocked car anywhere in the world. When you know, you will be enjoying water activities it would be best to leave valuables in a safe at the hotel. If you have to bring them along, then it is a good idea to purchase a waterproof fanny pack. If you only bring along car keys you can tie these inside your swimsuit to keep them safe. Also, do not leave valuables in plain sight in your car. Even if you lock your car, a thief might decide he wants the items bad enough to break a window.

If you would love to take pictures while on the beach or even snorkeling, you should invest in a waterproof camera. This way you will not have to sit on the beach while everyone else enjoys a swim just to watch over your camera.
